In the coming 2012 UN Security Council election which is to be held on October 18 during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Rwanda expects to be voted as the African representative and it has already got support of the African Union.

“It is true Rwanda has put its bid out to occupy one of the rotating seats at the level of the UN Security Council come 2013/2014. We have received unanimous support from African countries. We began by seeking support from eastern African bloc to which Rwanda is a member, and we expect to send our application to the United Nations this year”, the Minister of foreign affairs Louise Mushikiwabo told journalists last week.

The election is scheduled on October 18 this year, and if elected, Rwanda should occupy that seat in January 2013 replacing South Africa.

Earlier this month and in the previous weeks, Rwanda has been awarded by different organizations and in different sectors for its efforts that have made significant achievements in the benefit of Rwandan citizens and in the respect of international agreements. The trend might be a boost for the country’s external votes to gaining favours for the seat; political analysts suppose.

Last month, a community-based project from Rwanda to ensure equitable access to nine years of basic, quality education and skills won the 2012 Commonwealth Education Good Practice Awards.

The country had also been awarded for its efforts in promoting adult literacy. The award was presented to Rwanda by the Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). To add on these values earlier this month, Rwanda received an international award from the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) for its outstanding contribution to the Protection of the Ozone Layer that protects earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Dr.  Agnes Kalibata, the Rwandan Minister for agriculture and animal resources has won the Yara Prize 2012 alongside with Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhin, outgoing CEO of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) in Ethiopia. The two were selected as prominent African female leaders for their work on groundbreaking areas for the African Green Revolution.

Are all these signs are considered by some Nations and strong personalities as good governance despite the fact that the term good governance implies many different things in many different contexts.
