Habyarimana yari umukozi mu Kigo cy’u Rwanda gishinzwe Ubutaka, aho yakoreraga mu Murenge wa Kinigi mu Karere ka Musanze. Yamaze imyaka 15 ari umurezi.

Dr Naasson Munyandamutsa, 56 a famous Rwandan Psychiatrist and researcher has died at his home in Kigali this March 2, 2016, after succumbing to illness, family and relatives have disclosed.

The details of the disease that caused the death of Munyandamutsa has not been readily disclosed but Munyandamutsa will always be remembered in Rwanda for his influence in research and peace building, and his hard work as a medic.

In March 2013, Dr. Naasson Munyandamutsa was selected to receive the 2013 Barbara Chester Award. The award was formally presented to him on the 12^th of October on the Hopi Indian reservation in northeastern Arizona.

Who was Dr. Munyandamutsa? 

Munyandamutsa was a medical doctor with specializations in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. He has worked as a clinician and lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

A frequent presenter at international conferences on psychological trauma, Dr. Munyandamutsa addresses the psychological consequences of extreme violence and the challenges of living together in war torn societies.

He also collaborated with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in the capacity building of stakeholders by providing psychological treatment for victims and witnesses.

Before his death, he was a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Clinical Psychology at the National University of Rwanda, maintains a clinical practice, and worked for the promotion of dialogue as a mechanism for conflict management in war-torn countries in his role as Deputy Director of the Institute of Research and Dialogue for Peace (IRDP)

Dr. Munyandamutsa also is a member of the scientific support committee for Rwandan projects in the field of health funded projects by the government of Belgium. In 2011 he received the Geneva Prize Foundation for Human Rights in Psychiatry Award.

He was also one of the brains behind Never Again Rwanda- a human rights and peace building organization that was founded in response to the 1994 genocide perpetrated against Tutsis.

EAC leaders in Arusha on Wednesday

South Sudan has been admitted as the 6th Country in East African Community (EAC), Rwanda Eye report.

The inclusion of South Sudan was endorsed at the heads of state summit of the EAC, chaired by the Tanzanian leader John Pombe Magufuli on Wednesday.

This will widen the market size of the region to a staggering 164 million people, a sizeable population capable of attracting billions of dollars in Foreign Direct Investments.

South Sudan’s admission endorsed by the Heads-of-State meeting in Arusha, Tanzania on Wednesday ends several years of waiting to join the regional economic bloc comprising Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda.

EAC’s Growth Domestic Product is estimated at $134 billion.

“Youths have many opportunities that can be used to promote them economically. We also plan to keep on encouraging the youth to change their mindset towards work and set up income generating projects,” he clarified.

Marie Rose Muhawenimana, the commissioner for social affairsadvised youth to avoid bad behaviours like drinking alcohol, taking drugs, idleness and prostitution and instead start investing in their future through hard work.

Jean de DieuTabaro, coordinator forPersons with disabilities pledged to work hard to help more than 15000 people living with disabilities in Kirehe district to attain financial freedom.

“Some of the many things we intend to invest in, isempowering people with disabilities emotionally and economically so they can work and live a decent life instead of begging,” said Tabaro.

People with disabilities are not mentally disabled, so the new committee plans on training them in different skills like tailoring, crocheting and weaving to promote them socially, emotionally and economically.

At least 300 patients will receive free surgery courtesy of the medical outreach programme sponsored by the Rwanda Military Hospital and Rotary Club India.

 The patients are being treated by medical experts from Rotary Club India and Rwanda military medics at the University Teaching Hospital Kigali (CHUK) and Rwanda Military Hospital in Kanombe.

The programme will mostly benefit patients suffering from physical deformations resulting from accidents, birth defects and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Some of the cases being handled include orthopaedic problems and ENT (ear, nose and throat) problems

One of the Rwandan medical experts Col. Alex Butera said that there is a team of 25 Indian surgeons and five from Rwanda specialised in plastic and orthopedic surgery are offering free treatment since February 25.

“The treatment is free and so far the programme is running as planned. Our medical teams are handling between 15 and 20 cases on a daily basis” Butera said.

One of the patients, Emelyne Nyiransabimana from Rwamagana district said that she has suffered from a tumor for three years and had failed to get treatment until this opportunity surfaced.

“I am blessed to get free treatment, after years of living in pain due to lack of financial capacity to afford surgery” Nyiransabimana said.

The Rwanda Minister of Defense General James Kabarebe visited the Kanombe military hospital this March 2, 2016 to assess the progress of the medical outreach programme.

Gen. Kabarebe hailed the medical teams and said that the assistance given to the beneficiaries is a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to support citizen needs.

“We appreciate the good work being done by the medical experts, to treat our people; and we would like continue this collaboration in future” Kabarebe said.

The prime minister of Rwanda Anastase Murekezi has hailed different reforms undertaken in the country’s financial sector which has increased numbers of people finical included.

Murekezi also noted that the good results from financial inclusion survey were as a result of innovative products, promotion of financial   literacy, savings and credit cooperatives, saving schemes.

“This is a very great achievement. It is a sustainable stepping stone in our journey towards development,” the prime minister remarked while launching the Finscope survey 2016 on Thursday in Kigali.
He added, ‘We believe that financial inclusion is critical to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth and development.”

According to the survey, 89 percent  of adults in the country are financially included using both  formal and informal products and services which is about 5.2 million  people increasing from 72 percent  since 2012.

The survey also indicates that about 68 percent are accessing formal financial services which is about 4 million which includes banked and non banked financial services while banked are 26 percent ( 0.4 million people) and non banked 65 percent.

On the other hand, individuals who are accessing informal financial services are 72 percent around 4.2 million individuals with most found   in rural areas where financial institutions such as commercial banks cannot reach.

The survey which is done every after  four years highlights the level of  financial inclusion as as individual financial behaviors in the country which is a yard stick to policy makers towards fostering development.

“The survey is a credible source of information that guides policy intervention and financial service providers to reach more Rwandans and deepen our financial sector,”   Murekezi noted.

He also explained that it’s  is now very clear that Rwanda has a sound platform on which to lay the next building blocks required for financial deepening and become a regional financial hub.

The minister of Finance and economic planning Amb Claver  Gatete says that the survey portrays the positive performance of the country’s economy that is expected to leapfrog to middle income by 2020.

“This survey is a tool that helps to access the progress made in the development of the financial sector as a whole.

Minister Gatete said that the   government took the initiative to carry out the Finscope survey since 2008 to ensure there is credible information that would to enable the sector to grow its performance outlook.

President Kagame welcomes President Omar at Kigali International airport

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has argued the business community to take advantage of the strategic port facility at the Red Sea given to Rwanda by the Djibouti government.

“If we have that location developed we will be served well in a number of ways including; exploitation of the area by having Rwandan goods arrived at the port and even carried by air,” Kagame said.

Rwandan goods could be carried to the port by Rwandair and easily access the Gulf world and beyond.

Djibouti is located 2088 km away from Kigali which is about two times the distance between Kigali and Dar-es-Salam port (1,400km), but Rwanda considers access to the port at the horn of Africa offering another great trade advantage.

Rwanda is eying trade relations with the Arab world including the United Arab Emirates. Coffee, tea and horticulture products, on top of minerals are among the goods the country that are on demand in the Arab world.

President Kagame hosted Omar at a state dinner

Kagame said the private sector has to take lead in utilizing the cemented partnership with Djibouti.

The President made the call after hosting his counterpart Omar Guelleh with whom he held several bilateral agreements.

President Omar was in Rwanda for a two-day visit to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

“We discussed the possibility to integrate in several domains including; Information and Technology, highways and railways and other innovation features,” Omar said adding that, “We are satisfied of all the topics we discussed with the president in this beautiful country.”

Among the signed agreements by foreign affairs ministers of both countries include trade and diplomatic partnership.

Meanwhile, Rwanda has also granted Djibouti a plot in the Kigali Special Economic Zone.

President Omar returns home after his two-day visit

Cooperation, both locally and cross-border is one of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) priority policing areas to respond to the ever evolving transnational and organized crimes.

In an Interview, the Deputy Commissioner for Interpol and Cooperation in RNP, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Karake, “police cooperation is yielding good results in crime detection and prevention” especially through the use INTERPOL Police information system.

RNP extended the INTERPOL Police information system best known as I-247, to all 13 border posts, and ACP Karake said the instant communication tool connecting all the 190 member countries has been effective  in responding to cross-border crimes.

“In the last three years, for example, we have successfully intercepted 12 vehicles stolen from countries like Japan, Uganda, Kenya, UK and Belgium, seized 24kgs of cocaine worth US$720, 000 and nine hard drug traffickers, rescued six victims of human trafficking and recovered money valued at over Rwf32 million stolen  abroad and brought in Rwanda” said ACP Karake.

“Through this cooperation, genocide suspects hiding in other countries were also arrested and repatriated, illicit goods including food, counterfeit pharmaceutical and cannabis worth 40,000$USD were seized  through joint operations,” he added.

He further explained that through regional bilateral partnerships, RNP has sent its police liaison officers and to Kenya, Uganda and Burundi, which facilitates joint investigations and sharing of criminal information.

The three neighbouring police institutions are among signed cooperation agreement with RNP to jointly fight cross-border crimes, conduct joint training and share expertise.

“RNP has also particularly benefited in capacity building through exchange of best practices, training where officers acquire specific skills in investigating emerging modern crimes like cybercrime, human and drugs trafficking, counterfeit pharmaceuticals, sell of  illicit goods and counter terrorism among others.”

In the same context, eight other Police officers have been seconded to work in INTERPOL.

“Through police cooperation Rwanda was entrusted to hosting different international and regional police meetings where global and regional decision are taken which also promotes tourism in our country,” said ACP Karake.

Among the international meetings include the 84th INTERPOL General Assembly, the Kigali International Conference Declaration to end violence on women and girls, and the African regional conference on cybercrime and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), among others.

“We have signed cooperation agreements with several countries focusing on sharing of criminal information, joint investigation, deployment of police attaché and liaison officers to facilitate police operations in areas of  exchange of fugitives and criminal suspects, sharing expertise and experience, capacity building for police officers especially joint training, command post and field training exercises

President Kagame received by Senegalese President, Macky Sall

African scientists and leaders are gathered in Senegalese capital Dakar to brainstorm on how the continent’s science and technology can contribute solutions to global challenges.

This is the first time such a gathering is taking place in Africa. Organisers say the forum has attracted about 1,000 African scientists from more than 100 countries.

Dubbed the Next Einstein Forum (NEF)-2016, the three-day global science and technology forum  is where participants talk about “collaboration, innovation and solutions”

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has joined other seven African presidents at this inaugural forum including the host Senegal President Macky Sall.

Kagame, the ‘Digital President’ is an ardent promoter of use of technology and believes in investing in the country’s youth.

For him, “Social media helps connect people, ideas and the world. We are part of that.”

The Rwandan leader who has deeply embraced e-governance, uses social media to easily interact with citizens including people across the world .

His twitter handle @paulkagame has attracted 1,360,000 followers up from 590,782 followers in October 2014. Only the Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta comes close to this with 1,350,000 followers.

Out of politics Kagame will use twitter to for example express his unwavering support to Arsenal football club….” A relaxed moment to talk a bit about ftball. Arsenal is still my team! But Leicester is the team to beat for this season’s EPL trophy !!!..”

Kagame’s leadership team from the district mayors to cabinet ministers have taken to social media to interact with the public. Various Ministers regularly hold ‘Ask-the-minister’ sessions to respond to several issues.

Rwanda has invested over $130 million in broadband internet connecting 97 government agencies in the capital Kigali and 226 agencies in 30 districts. Currently 8,759,619 citizens use mobile phones.

The country has a population of 11 million people.

“The continent has an understanding, that we cannot reach development without investing in our people,” Kagame told the forum.

Focused on transforming Rwanda into a Knowledge based economy, Kagame’s government has enabled 2.5 million children to access computers through ‘One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project.

“Youth can be a huge resource and opportunity depending on how you invest with and in them,” President Kagame told said at the ongoing NEF2016 forum in Senegal.

Rwanda is gradually experiencing a boom in youth projects and a massive growth of ICT currently contributing 3% of the GDP representing more than all agriculture exports combined.

Kagame announced that Rwanda will host the global headquarters for AIMS-African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and will also host the forthcoming NEF2017.

Le Président Kagame et son homologue Alpha Condé lors de la conférence de presse

Le Président Paul Kagame a fait une visite officielle de 48h en Guinée Conakrydans le but de renforcer les domaines de coopération entre les deux pays. Le Chef de l’Etat guinéenAlpha Condé est clair. Il est fasciné par le modèle de gouvernance de Kagame.

« Je respecte beaucoup le Président Kagamé. Je l’admire pour ce qu’il a fait pour le peuple rwandais. J’espère que je pourrais faire la même chose pour la Guinée. Nos deux pays regorgent de richesses et nous voulons les mettre ensemble pour renforcer nos relations », a précisé le Président Alpha Condé.

Pour Condé, les bonnes pratiques de gouvernance socioéconomique et administrative du Rwanda depuis la fin du génocide sont citées en modèle un peu partout sur le continent. Pour lui, il n’y a aucune honte ni gène à reconnaître qu’un pays africain est mieux géré que la Guinée.

« Nous sommes impatients de réunir notre peuple à œuvrer pour le développement de l’Afrique dont il mérite. Ce qui reste pour nous, c’est de travailler ensemble pour un avenir meilleur et le développement de notre continent », a suggéré Kagame.

Par ailleurs, cette visite s’est clôturée par une signature d’accords de coopérations de plusieurs domaines comme les visas pour l’immigration, l’aviation, l’investissement, etc.

« Le Rwanda est mieux géré que la Guinée. Ce que nous pouvons prendre chez eux sans copier, nous le prendrons pour améliorer notre gestion. Parce que nous venons de loin à cause de la mauvaise gouvernance qui a longtemps caractérisé la Guinée. Je pense que mon Haut Représentant, (Sidya Touré, NDRL) ne me contredira pas. Nous avons un grand défi à relever. Ce qui fait que l’exemple du Rwanda est un bon exemple pour moi », a martelé Président Condé.

Condé a ajouté que « malgré son douloureux passé lié au génocide, tout le monde reconnaît que le Rwanda a fait un pas de géant. Le Rwanda se présente aujourd’hui comme un pays économiquement et administrativement bien géré. C’est pourquoi j’ai souhaité développer des relations avec lui pour bénéficier de ses expériences », a déclaré  Condé.
