Following a growing number of Rwandans seeking driving licence, Police says it has revised its plan and people can now sit for tests twice a month.
Traffic and Road Safety department at the Rwanda Police announced driver’s license tests in the capital Kigali will now conducted two separate times for registration and tests every month.
In a statement released, Traffic Police said the decision comes after 60% of the number of people registering for the driver’s licence tests come from the City of Kigali and there was a need to simplify the procedures.
“In every registration window, we approximately register 11, 000 candidates countrywide, but over 4500 of them are in the City of Kigali.” Said Chief Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kambanda, spokesperson of the traffic department.
Rwanda government has offered Irembo-an online registration platform to help people from across the country register easily without spending money travelling to registration centres. Each district has its exact number and it would be a challenge since Kigali would have the largest number, CIP Kambanda said.
“We have, therefore, made new arrangements in favor of the big turn up in Kigali, to increase the slots by 2, 400 to 6, 900. The first registration batch will be given 4500 slots while the remaining 2400 will register in the second window,” CIP Kambanda explained.
Meanwhile, countrywide registration for those seeking driver’s license opened last Monday but CIP Kabanda said that the second registration batch in the City of Kigali will start next Monday, August 29.
There is a growing number of vehicles owned in the country, which prompts an increase in the number of Rwandans seeking driver’s licence. According to available data from Rwanda Revenue Authority, the number of registered vehicles in the country has grown from 88,621 in 2010 to 210,000 vehicles this year.
