The Mayor of Gasabo district, Willy Ndizeye has commended residents of Gikomero sector for their efforts in promoting good governance, but asked them to improve the participation in health insurance.
The Mayor was addressing residents during the ongoing good governance month held at the sector offices on October 8, 2014.
Residents told the Mayor that this achievement has been because of the help of Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development (RISD), which trained local arbitrators (abunzi), mobilized and educated residents on conflict resolution and land laws.
Ndizeye said that the sector has shown outstanding efforts in solving community conflicts, setting up its own community policing force and creating income generating projects- which gives the community an opportunity to strive for growth.
“I am impressed by the example of hard work and innovativeness in the Gikomero community. Let’s strive for more and encourage others to work for the growth of the community. He said, but not that Gikomero has to move beyond the current 37% health insurance.
Ann Kayirabwa, Country Director of RISD said that the success story of good governance in the sector is a reflected in the development of the community and citizens being able to resolve conflicts; and said that RISD will continue supporting the community to grow in the future.
Gikomero was one of the poorest sectors in Gasabo District, but thanks to Government programs like VUP, this is no longer the case, and the sector now has electricity, water and a good transport network due to a good road, and residents have are involved in income.
Early September President Paul Kagame visited and interacted with thousands of residents in Gikomero Sector, who had various issues of concern and unresolved conflicts which ranged from land disputes, conflicts and leaders delivering justice.
Kagame asked the government leaders especially the minister of local government and district officials to fast track their responsibility in resolving the issues as soon as possible.
