Burera and Gicumbi districts are working together to eradicate the use of drugs in both Districts especially the locally made brew known as Kanyanga which have done more harm to districts’ residents.

In the meeting for two Districts officials on 20th.March.2013, resolutions to eradicate the use and trading of these drugs were discussed.
The mayor of Gicumbi District Alexander Mvuyekure explained that it was revealed that most crimes committed in the Northern Province of Rwanda especially in Burera and Gicumbi District that disrupt people’s security and lead to some losing their lives due to violence are caused by drugs especially the local Kanyanga.
Mvuyekure also said people need to be diligent and be the neighbours watch, report anyone who makes, sells or uses the illicit drug and with the support of security committees this will be achieved.
Faustin Kayumba who represented the mayor of Burera district explained that people who will be caught distributing or using this drug will be contained in Transit Centers to help them understand the gravity of their actions. The Abarembetsi groups which distribute the illicit drug are going to be supported in forming associations to work on instead of doing the unwanted trade and cause insecurities.

Sectors that neighbours the Rwanda –Uganda of Rubaya, Cyumba, Manyagiro, Bungwe and Kivuye and provide the route for transportation of Kanyanga from Uganda are supposed to be more vigilant in watching people who bring the drug in the country and give information to stop it.
Some of the Kanyanga traders locally called Abarembetsi confessed saying the Illicit drug is of no importance apart from poverty and addiction and asked their fellows to stop trading this drug that cause so much violence and insecurities.
The management of these sectors needs to fight the group of Kanyanga distributors called Abarembetsi that distributes the illicit drug in both districts of Burera and Gicumbi.
