Beyond the looks and style, young women have the potential to solve the world’s problems using technology, the First Lady said while officiating at the Ms Geek 2016 Awards on Saturday at Serena hotels.
Jeanette Kagame said that nurturing and encouraging young women to venture into technology would help them unlock the opportunities in the ICT sector.
“It speaks directly to the successful mobilization within our communities to empower girls and women to reach their potential,” the First Lady said adding that such successes have shown that advances young women have taken in technology.
The Ms Geek Awards, organized by GirlsinICT Rwanda are aimed at inspiring girls to be part of problem solving for the country using technology and encourage them to consider a career in Science.
“It’s truly admirable to see such an increasing number of platforms like this that create divide kind of opportunities for young women to explore the ever expanding universe,” Jeanette Kagame noted.
Lucy Mbabazi, President of Girls in ICT project says that the girls competed basing on innovative ideas as well as their ability to develop a certain technology or develop a business idea while also encouraging more girls to take up technology.
“We are changing the attitude of our girls, parents and teachers in hopes that they can be in an exciting field which the girls in girls in ICT are in every day,” she noted.
The annual competitions in its third year saw five finalists out of 130 girls from different institutions pitch their projects in the sectors of community security, health, security, finance and service delivery sectors.
Rosine Mwiseneza, 22 from Kepler University with her project Automated Irrigation (Ivomerere) System which eases farmers from routine irrigation monitoring became this year’s winner of the Ms Geek walking away with Rwf 2 million prize.
“I have already made a prototype and now I want ot develop it into a full solution for people to use,” the Jolly Mwiseneza said.
Other finalist projects included meet the Doctor by Faridah Umutoni from Akilha Insititute ,IV drip Alert by Ange Uwambijimana from Tumba College, Easy Parking byLisa Noella Kirezi from Gashora Girls Academy and Hellojob by Samantha Pauline Manywa from Gashora Girls Academy.
