Referendum: Millions of voters pour into polling stations

Referendum voting process is underway since early morning this Friday across the country, millions of Rwandans had started voting this morning.

Millions of Rwandans, 6,392,867 eligible voters are already voting; some have left polling stations amid jubilation that they have peacefully exercised their constitutional rights after they decided to vote their newly amended Constitution.

According to the Executive Secretary of the Rwanda ‘National Electoral Commission’ (NEC) Charles Munyaneza, over 600 election observers are monitoring the REFERENDUM voting process.

Observers are reported to have come from various forums, Political parties, National Human Rights Commission, Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) and various civil society groups both local and International as well as foreign diplomatic missions based in the country.

The National Electoral Commission also revealed “Provisional results will be released on Friday night while final results are expected to be announced before Monday.”

The referendum that follows petitions to Parliament from about four million Rwandans earlier this year is about a YES or NO vote, thus approving or rejecting an amended constitution that gives President Kagame a chance to bid for another term in office.

Polling stations are busy with voters lining up both youth and elders, ordinary and elite Rwandans are participating in the process where some elderly Rwandans with highly advanced age have been seem walking in hurry to cast their vote.
