The police have paraded two policemen whom the Criminal Investigation Department highly believes were involved in the murder plot of Gustave Makonene, an employee of Transparence International last year.
The suspects are Nelson Iyakaremye and Isaac Ndabarinze; both Rwanda Police officers with the rank of CPL were arrested at different intervals recently.
Gustave, coordinator of Transparency International Rwanda’s Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre in Rubavu, northwestern Rwanda, was last seen leaving his office in Rubavu on the evening of July 17, 2013.
Residents of Nyiraruhonga found his body on the morning of July 18 just off a road along the shore of Lake Kivu near Kigufi area. A police medical report indicates he was strangled. Makonene had been handling corruption allegations, some of which reportedly involved members of the police
ACP Theos Badege, the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said today, that after indepth investigation, police is clear that the two suspects are likely to have been involved in the murder.
“We have taken enough time to thoroughly investigate this case, basing on the evidence; we believe these to be the suspects. Most of the information is based on the testimonies we have” Badege said.
The suspects will soon be sent to prosecution to officially go on trial.
Badege asked the media to follow up the case trial so as to have concrete evidence and circumstance surrounding the alleged murder.
However, as a security organ, Badege said that it was a shame to have police officers involved in the murder of persons that they were supposed to protect.
He stated that the track records of both police officers have not been clean and they had been involved in more dirty deals in their respective areas of work. The suspects are Nelson Iyakaremye & Isac Ndabarinze, both #Rwanda Police Officers with the rank of CPL
