The government of Rwanda has been pleased after the establishment of an expanded joint verification mechanism which aims to check, analyze and assess the security situation on the bordering region between Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo; a mechanism to be launched in Goma next Friday
This is one of the outcomes of the last session of the International Conference on the Great Lakes region which was held in Kampala last week. The aim of the joint verification mechanism is to carry out the real security situation in Eastern DRC especially on the bordering areas.
The joint verification mechanism which will be assigned by defense ministers in Goma on Friday 14th September 2012 will be led by a Ugandan Brigadier General, who will have his deputy from Congo-Brazzaville.
They will collaborate with the already present intelligence group to help the whole region know what is exactly going on, before deciding to launch a military force or otherwise.
The Minister of foreign affairs for Rwanda Louise Mushikiwabo has said in a press conference in Kigali that Rwanda wishes the joint verification mechanism to be put in place as soon as possible, because everything that has been said will be assessed by different people from the region.
“Rwanda has made reacted to every single detailed accusation to clarify that what has been put in the UN experts report was wrong. We think now this is time for others to see the truth on the ground by themselves and this joint verification mechanism will help”, she noted.
The group will be formed by not less than 45 observers. Each country among the eleven that compose the ICGL will provide two or three military officers. They will have a task of checking and analyzing everything that was said in the UN report which according to the Minister Mushikiwabo contains a lot of rumors and baseless information.
