The upcoming 19th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi is in high in Nyagatare District, an official has disclosed.
In an exclusive interview, the district deputy mayor in charge of social affairs, Charlotte Mubyimana said that arrangements are in place for the week-long commemoration.
“We have set all the necessary requirements for a successful genocide commemoration week in the district,” she said.
On the district level, the vice mayor said the official commemoration week will be launched at Umuvumba river, where different officials will lay the wrath on the river shores.
Umuvumba is a meandering river that originates from the northern part of the country.
After the 1994 genocide, hundreds of bodies of innocent Tutsi killed during the mass killings were retrieved on the river banks.
“We shall officially launch the commemoration week at Umuvumba River. This is a River that harbours history genocide of what happened here as it meandered with bodies of those killed during the genocide,” added Musabyimana.
Trauma cases reduced
Meanwhile, the vice mayor went on to praise the work done by health councilors in the district to help reduce cases of trauma among genocide survivors.
“We trained a good number of health councilors to work with health centres in reducing cases of those affect during commemoration week. This has exhibited a positive impact where we received very little cases of trauma last year,” said Musabyimana.
This year’s commemoration of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi will be held at village levels Countrywide.
